Finding info about the 4G series of Ford engines is more annoying than I had anticipated

A range of older 2.5l turbodiesels that includes the 4GA, 4GB, 4GC, 4GD, 4GE and 4GF.

are you sure they were actually officially called that? ‘cos absolutely zero comes up in google with those nomenclatures.

The 90's transit one? Ford 2.5 DI?
Fun fact: The Turbo ones often wore through the rubber part on the stop solenoid, meaning it won’t stop when you turn the key off, and will go into emergency/limp mode when started again. turn off the key and immediately stall it in a high gear, now restart and you have full power.

Yeah, I’m sure. The nomenclature is confirmed both by diagnostic software and the VIN plate on my dad’s Transit (which has the 4GE version of the 2.5TD in it). I wanted to know what exactly is the difference between all those variants.

It would seem that the internets have forgotten about what was called the “banana” engine. Too old I suppose.

There were NA and turbo models from 70 to 100 bhp but beyond that nothing seems to be known to Mr Google.

Yup. 2.5 TD to be exact. 4G seems to be the 85hp version of the motor, but I’d kinda like to know what exactly the difference is between all the variants.

They also go by the “banana” name for the NA versions due to the intake manifold layout. Awesome engines, the car itself is thrash tho(fist-sized rust holes in frame)

There are a few words here where we learn that it was based on the 2.4 York engine with almost all part changed but beyond that....

Wouldn’t call them trash, but Transits definitely like to rust. I don’t know if Ford finally sorted the problem out in the newest gen, global Transit, but the one before that was just as bad as the old ones.

Yeah, for an engine that powered so many things back in the day info is surprisingly scarce.

I believe one of the differences is that the A/B/C/D versions came with glowplugs, while the E/F didn’t. Couldn’t find anything beyond that.

My dad’s Transit actually started suffereing from a similar issue at one point, although it was supposedly due to crap in the bioester fuel my dad was trying out causing the diesel shutoff valve to stick. The way to turn the engine off was to turn the key all the way to “OFF”, and then back to the “RUN”, which would cause an emergency shutoff of the electronic injection pump.

That engine is from before Ford introduced Duratorq branding for diesels. It’s much more closely related to the ancient York diesel than anything that came afterwards.

Well trash was maybe a bit too broad, the mechanics were well, but rust rust rust, even the rust rusted. As it does on most fords around those years :P
